I was taking a vacation in beautiful Long Beach, CA lately and I decided to whip out my handheld camcorder and make a gritty, but important video for you. You need to watch this if you want to grow your practice without burning yourself out.
It is extremely important to take a break from your practice so that you can actually see the forest through the trees.
Stepping away from your practice allows you to think about how you can control your practice, as opposed to your practice taking control of you.
It’s important to step away sometimes so you can take a critical look at the:
- Systems and infrastructure of your practice (documentation, billing, marketing)
- Staff that runs your practice
- Feedback loops and mechanisms to improve everything you are doing
Wondering where to take your next vacation? We’ve got that figured out for you. Las Vegas!
On April 13-15 the top physical therapy private practice owners will be in Las Vegas at the Private Practice Retreat. This was created to give you a chance to vacation, while learn in a very calm relaxing environment.
In my opinion this is the best way to work on your practice while being away from it.
Click the banner below for more details about the event. Note that seats are running out fast so you don’t want to wait too long.

As an overworked PT trying to juggle personal life and growing my private practice, this is precious. Time management eludes me. No matter how hard and how long I worked, I still have a lot of backlogs. In my 3 years as a private practitioner, I only went on a short vacation twice and all the time, I was worrying about my clinic. I was not a worrywart before but I developed into one since I went to business on my own.
If this event will help me, I'll find a way to be there.

I totally agree with you that we need to step back to have a better perspective. It is true in private practice and it is true in everyday life. But that is easier said than done. How can you really take some time off from your business in the current economy we have? I feel that if I loosen the reins and go on vacation, somebody will pounced on my absence and take over my patients.
Like I want to be there in April for the Private Practice Retreat but I'm not sure if I will be comfortable being away for more than 2 days. When I think about it however, I think the pros overweighs the cons. Perhaps, this is a good investment of my time and money that will allow me to be less stressed by the business and give more time to my family.

I envy you, Nitin. Going on vacation while you're business runs by itself.
I used to work in a hospital where you are required to report on a fixed schedule and I hated that. So I went into private practice because I thought I can work whenever I want. To my surprise, I worked longer hours now. Sure, the money is way better but it goes to a point where I do not even have the time to enjoy it.
I showed this blog to my business partner and he said I should attend. He joked that I am getting cranky and he would love to shake me off even just for a few days.

This is quite a unique concept. It reminds me of a book I believe by Michael Gerber, I believe it was called E-myth or something like that. I definitely have been overwhelmed and don't really feel comfortable with putting things on hold at my practice while I'm away.
I'm unfortunately a one man show or at least it feels like that at times. I wish I could take a break like you do Nitin!

The Private Practice Retreat sounds like something I would definitely want to go to.
How many private practice owners are going to be attending? Will there be networking
at the event itself where we can talk with other private practice owners?
I do agree with you Nitin that it's hard to see the big picture when we are so close
to the situation itself. I guess I just have to overcome the fear that I cannot move away
even for a few days from my practice. I am thirsty for this kind of freedom that it seems
you've mastered.

Yes i definitely agree. Many professionals rarely notice the importance of having a break from everything. Even as we simply speak, we usually do pauses and breaks. That is why there is a comma and a period. The same with work, all of it without any recreation makes you dull. it hinders you from enjoying the reason why we work, that is to be able to pursue our dreams and enjoy, and one way of these is having a vacation trip. Oh but how i wish my savings could also bring me to places like that!

Nitin, how do you do it? What is your secret? How do you come up with these great ideas??
I am attending the conference this April so I will get insights on how I can step back, take a closer look at my business and make it better!

Taking a vacation once in a while will actually help your business grow and improve. Sometimes, you really have to go and look far so as to see your business more clearly. Thank you for this. It reminded me to relax in a bit and unwind. I am so looking forward to have a vacation as well. Maybe next quarter.
