<p>In order to stand apart as a physical therapy private practice, you need to be able to do 3 things:</p>
<p>a) Identify a targeted patient audience that you can serve (specialize)</p>
<p>b) Provide easy solutions (information) to those patients</p>
<p>c) Simply complex problems for the patient with a step-by-step blueprint / protocol that is easy for them to understand and implement.</p>
<p>Once you can provide patients (and the community) with this information in an easy to digest format (using various forms of delivery like newsletters, ebooks, teleseminars etc), you will immediately stand out as a provider and get noticed by doctors and patients.</p>
<p><strong>How do you know you have done this successfully? </strong></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We are getting close to the week and I am doing a complete evaluation of my own business.<br />
 Here are some of the things I am looking at:</p>
<p>a) My BIGGEST income producing activities<br />
 b) The BEST opportunities for me to provide EVEN MORE services to my clients<br />
 c) The activities that DRAIN my energy and can be delegated<br />
 d) The CRITICAL levers in my business</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important to check the health of your own business once in a while. We don&#8217;t think twice about patient evaluations, but how often do we evaluate the health of our own business?</p>
<p>I like to think of a business as a building that grows upwards, towards the sky. As a business grows, change and improvement is harder to implement, but it also has a big impact that trickles down to the core, transforming the business.</p>
<p>One Saturday in July, I spent the entire day with a group of high level entrepreneurs &#8211; private practice owners who are generating six and seven figure revenues and we all get together and discuss what&#8217;s working in our business, what we need help with, and basically share success ideas and ways to get from &#8220;here to there&#8221; faster.</p>
<p>Imagine being able to borrow nine successful people&#8217;s minds for a day and have them work on your business. It&#8217;s like strapping a rocket to your car.</p>
<p>Nothing beats getting &#8220;up close and personal&#8221; with super achievers. Networking with likeminded people has been my number one secret for getting my businesses to massive success quickly. Having people I can call on, meet with, and partner with has been instrumental for my business.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s what I want to impress upon you today.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s something magical that happens when you meet with people live and in person. Relationships are forged, contacts are made, ideas are shared, new ventures are born, and all of a sudden your practice explodes!</p>
<p>I go to as many live events, seminars, masterminds, and workshops as I can. And at each and every single one, without fail, I&#8217;ve created contacts and forged relationships that have given my business major speed.</p>

<p>Endorsed mailings pull patients to you like a magnet.</p>
<p>Think about your clients for a moment. What type of occupation do they have?</p>
<p>How many people do they have in their circle of influence?</p>
<p>Do you train any doctors, attorneys, accountants, executives or business owners? If so, all of these people have tremendous influence with their customers, employees, vendors and even the community.</p>
<p>This combined circle of influence can allow you to reach you to almost every single person in your community.</p>
<p>Why not ask them to endorse your services to their circle of influence? It’s pretty simple really.</p>
<p>Here are some things to remember when crafting your endorsed letter:</p>
<p>* You write the letter that your patient will send to his or her circle of influence.<br />
 * The letter should be on your patient&#8217;s business letterhead (if they have one)<br />
 * The letter should be addressed from your client.<br />
 * You pay for the envelope, stamp, and paper.</p>

<p>In addition to the projected reductions due to the SGR, CMS also proposes a multiple procedure payment reduction policy (MPPR) that would result in significant reductions in payment for outpatient therapy services. Specifically, CMS proposes to make full payment for the therapy service or unit with the highest practice expense value and payment of 50% of the practice expense component for the second and subsequent procedures or units of the service furnished during the same day for the same patient.</p>
<p><strong>What is their rationale?</strong></p>
<p>CMS’s rationale for this policy is their claim that therapy services are misvalued for physician fee schedule payment when multiple services are furnished to a patient in a single session because duplicate clinical labor and suppliers are included in the PE of the services furnished. They also express concerns about increased utilization of outpatient therapy services.</p>
<p>It is estimated that if the multiple procedure payment reduction policy were implemented, payment for outpatient therapy services to settings inside the PFS (i.e. physical therapist private practices and physician offices) would be reduced by approximately 12% in 2011 in addition to the projected SGR payment cut for CY 2011.</p>
<p>Because providers in settings outside the PFS (i.e. outpatient hospitals, skilled nursing facilities (Part B), CORFs, rehabilitation agencies) are also paid using the PFS payment rates and policies for physical therapy services, CMS estimates that this proposal would reduce (not redistribute) payments in those settings for therapy services by approximately 13 percent in CY 2011.</p>
<p><strong>The APTA&#8217;s Position</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;APTA is gravely concerned with the magnitude of these proposed reductions in payment, and believes that CMS’s proposal to apply the multiple procedure payment reduction to outpatient therapy services is based on flawed presumptions and has no justification. APTA will aggressively work to stop implementation of the proposed MPPR policy and the SGR payment reductions.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>The Writing is on the Wall</strong></p>
<p>Even if this initiative gets delayed, the bigger picture is evident. These reimbursement cuts are simply the precursor of a major shift that is inevitable.</p>
<p>We are trained to be viable practitioners, and now is the time to learn the skills to become viable practice owners. The time has come for us to learn the intrinsic skills necessary to market a practice and build business systems that can weather the economy and the cuts imposed on us by CMS or private insurers.</p>
<p>One way or another, reimbursements are going to decline. What we need is</p>
<ol>
<li>Business systems to empower our clinical skills</li>
<li>Retention systems to increase the number of patient visits</li>
<li>Incentives for staff to perform better</li>
<li>Strategies to appeal to referral sources and build multiple sources of referrals</li>
<li>Access to some of the TOP physical therapists in the country, who can teach us HOW to stand out and thrive, not just survive.</li>
</ol>
